DYLEThe Battle Honour DYLE was the first distinction awarded for battles and actions in North-West Europe between 1940 and 1945. DYLE was the opening action of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) campaign in Belgium from 10-16 May 1940, and the objective was to halt the German army along the line of the River Dyle. The Battle Honour DYLE is emblazoned on The King's Colour of The Royal Irish Regiment.

The Battle Honour GAZA is emblazoned on the King's Colour of The Royal Irish Regiment.

GAZA was granted for actions over the period 26 March-7 November 1917. One such action was the battle for Beersheba on 31 October 1917. The reserve brigade in the 10th (Irish) Division for the initial attacks was 31 Brigade.* As part of the final phase, 31 Brigade had the task of attacking the Turks over the Wadi esh Sheria to cut their defensive line across the Gaza-Beersheba road.

The Battle Honour HAVANNAH is emblazoned on the Regimental Colours of The Royal Irish Regiment. It was awarded to The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers for an action during the Anglo-Spanish War in 1762. The distinction was not borne on our antecedent Regiment's Colours until the Army Order of November 1909 awarded it to the fifteen British regiments that had served with General The Earl of Albemarle’s expedition to Havana.

BH HNBURG LINEThe Battle Honour HINDENBURG LINE was awarded to our antecedent Regiment, The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, for the actions of both the 5th Battalion and the 6th (Service) Battalion during the campaign to break the German defences known as the Hindenburg Line. The distinction is now emblazoned on the King’s Colour of The Royal Irish Regiment.

During the month-long Third Battle of Gaza, the Turkish defensive line along the Gaza-Beersheba road was breached in the first week of November. From then on, the enemy was in retreat, but General Allenby’s pursuit was hampered by water supply problems. Nevertheless, Allenby split the Turkish army in two following an action some 20 miles to the west of Jerusalem and forced its parts to retreat east and north. The culmination of the Third Battle of Gaza would be the fall of Jerusalem.

The Korean War (1950-1953) was the first major action for the United Nations following the UN’s formation in 1945. In June 1950, North Korea attacked South Korea. Twenty-one UN countries went to fight against North Korea. Later, the Chinese supported the North Koreans.

BH Macedonia 1915-17The Honour MACEDONIA 1915-17 is emblazoned on the King's Colour of The Royal Irish Regiment.

The Theatre Honour was awarded to our antecedent regiments, The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, The Royal Irish Rifles and the Royal Irish Fusiliers, for the actions of their battalions on the Macedonian and Salonika fronts from 1915 to 1917. The Battalions served in the theatre with the 10th (Irish) Division and the 27th Infantry Division.
